Soil Testing Penetrometers

Soil-testing penetrometers are designed to test the consistency, shear strength and unconfined compressive strength of soil. Raptor Supplies offers a wide range of soil penetrometers from brands like AMS and Humboldt. Pocket penetrometers can quickly verify whether excavation side walls of OSHA-classified cohesive soils, including stable rocks, Type A, B & C soils and layered geological strata, require shoring. These devices measure strength in tons/sq. ft. or kg/sq. cm by pushing a 1/4-inch spring-loaded piston into soil up to a depth of 0.25 inches. Selected models come equipped with an Allen wrench, a special in-diameter adapter foot and a plastic carrying case with belt loops. To quickly determine in-situ California Bearing Ratio (CBR) values of subbases, pavement bases and subgrades, the dynamic core penetrometers developed by the Army Corps of Engineers feature a stainless-steel dual-mass hammer and a disposable cone adapter with 25 disposable cones for easily extracting the instrument from hard / cohesive soil. These penetrometers can measure the shear strength of soil within a CBR range of 0.5 - 100 percent and a maximum bearing value of 10800 psf. A wide variety of these soil penetrometers are available in different CBR values on Raptor Supplies.

Features

Humboldt Pocket Penetrometers

  • They have a direct-reading scale in tons / square foot or kg / square cm that corresponds to equivalent unconfined compressive strength.
  • These pocket soil penetrometers can operate at ranges from 0 to 4.5 tons.
  • They are equipped with a belt-loop style carrying case for ease of handling.

AMS Pocket Penetrometer

  • This soil pocket penetrometer measures consistency, shear strength and approximate unconfined shear strength.
  • It features a direct-reading scale that offers readings in tons/square feet or kg/sq.cm.
  • This soil compaction penetrometer has aluminium construction for structural rigidity and corrosion resistance.

Working Mechanism

  • A probe is driven into the soil, measuring resistance.
  • Record the force applied and depth of penetration.
  • Analyse the data to determine soil properties.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to test extremely low strength cohesive soils?

Use low-strength soil adapter feet to increase the effective area measured by a factor of 16 times. To obtain the correct unconfined compressive strength, divide the value obtained (on the low-load side) by 16.

How accurate is a pocket penetrometer?

Pocket penetrometers are not individually calibrated so there are no calibration certificates. Errors up to 1/2 division on the scale (equivalent to 0 to 0.124 TSF) are possible with these soil penetrometers.

Is there any training required for using a penetrometer?

Special training is necessary for properly using a penetrometer and interpreting the test results. It should cover the following points:
    • Soil mechanics: The user must understand the fundamental principles of soil behaviour and how it responds to stress and strain.
    • Use of Penetrometer: Proper technique for operating a penetrometer, including how to prepare the soil for testing, how to perform the test and how to interpret the results.
    • Soil classification: Understanding how to classify soil based on its properties and characteristics, such as its texture, structure and consistency.
    • Soil compaction: The user must know various factors that contribute to soil compaction and how to perform the related test using a penetrometer.
    • Data analysis and interpretation: Understanding how to analyse and interpret the data collected from soil testing which includes calculating soil stiffness, compaction and other parameters.

How to maintain a soil penetrometer?

  • Clean the penetrometer after each use to remove any signs of dust or debris from interfering with future tests.
  • Store the device in a dry, clean and protected place. Use a protective case or container to keep it safe from moisture, dust and extreme temperatures when not in use.
  • Inspect the penetrometer regularly for signs of wear and damage, including cracks or dents. Repair or replace any parts (if necessary) to ensure accurate results.
  • Calibrate the testing device regularly to ensure accurate results from it.

What compatible accessories of these soil testing penetrometers are available on Raptor Supplies?

Yes, customers can opt for Humboldt soil testing penetrometer accessories that includes penetration needles, cones, replacement tips and penetrometer extractor jacks.

What factors should I consider before choosing a soil testing penetrometer?

  • Determine your testing purpose.
  • Select the right probe.
  • Check the required depth range.
  • Ensure measurement accuracy.
  • Consider data logging capabilities.
  • Assess field use convenience.
  • Stay within budget.
  • Note calibration needs.
  • Choose a rugged build.
  • Look for safety features.

How do I clean and maintain soil test pocket penetrometers?

  • Remove soil debris.
  • Wipe the penetrometer clean.
  • Check calibration regularly.
  • Lubricate moving parts if needed.
  • Store in a protective case.
  • Periodically inspect for damage.
  • Recalibrate if necessary.
  • Follow manufacturer's guidelines.
