Working Mechanism

  • Laboratory ovens and furnaces use heating elements made of metal alloys to produce heat.
  • The heat is then transferred to the oven's interior and subsequently to the materials being heated.
  • They have a thermocouple or RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) sensor to measure the temperature inside the chamber and a controller to regulate the temperature. Some of them may also have a computer interface to program the temperature profile & the timer for the experiment.
  • The way the heat is transferred and the temperature is controlled can differ based on the type of oven or furnace.
  • Forced-air ovens use a fan to circulate heated air around the oven's interior and a thermostat to maintain a constant temperature. The temperature inside the oven can be controlled by adjusting the temperature of the heating elements & the fan speed.
  • Gravity convection ovens use natural convection currents where the heat is transferred from the heating element to the air that rises & cools and creates a circulating current of hot & cold air. These ovens do not require a fan.
  • Vacuum ovens use a vacuum pump to remove air from the oven and decrease the boiling point of liquids, allowing materials to be heated at lower temperatures. They may also prevent the oxidation of the materials being heated. The temperature inside the vacuum oven is controlled by regulating the temperature of the heating elements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a laboratory oven and a laboratory furnace?

Laboratory ovens are used for heating materials at lower temperatures, generally up to about 300 to 400 degrees C. Laboratory furnaces, on the other hand, are used for heating materials at higher temperatures, generally above 600 degrees C.

What are some safety instructions to follow while operating these laboratory ovens and laboratory furnaces?

  • Monitor the temperature inside the oven or furnace and ensure that it is stable & accurate.
  • Clean the oven or furnace regularly to remove dust, debris or spills.
  • Check for any signs of wear or damage.
  • Calibrate these units periodically.

Can laboratory ovens and furnaces be used for continuous operation?

Most of the laboratory ovens and furnaces are suitable for batch-style operation, where the materials are loaded into the oven or furnace, heated and then removed. However, some industrial-grade units can be used for continuous operation and support the loading & unloading of materials while the heating is ongoing.
