Description

Thread inserts are suitable for installing threaded fasteners in soft materials, thin materials or materials with a stripped & threaded hole. They are ideal for automobile, aerospace and maintenance applications. Raptor Supplies offers these thread inserts from brands like Grainger, Chrislynn, Helicoil, E-Z Lok & Walter. They provide more strength, versatility & resilient operation than traditional threaded holes.

Features

  • Thread inserts are ideal for creating strong internal threading on various materials like metals, polymers, wood & composites.
  • They offer a strong connection to the fastener while preventing wear, corrosion or over-torque.
  • Helical threaded inserts may have a tang / prong at the end of the insert for ease of installation.
  • The thread inserts are made of stainless steel, steel or brass and are available in various thread sizes, such as UNC, UNF, BSW, BSF, BSP, NPT, Imperial & Metric.
  • Raptor Supplies also offers Grainger power drivers for installing these inserts.

Chrislynn Thread Inserts :

  • These free-running inserts are made of stainless steel for outdoor applications.
  • They are DFARS compliant and may adhere to military or aerospace specifications when required.
  • These Metric threading inserts are available in lengths ranging from 3 to 36 mm.

E-Z Lok Thread Inserts

  • These E-Z Press inserts are ideal for post-moulding installation in thermoset plastics & thermoplastics.
  • They have a slotted design with a diamond-knurled outer surface for cold installation and optimum torque & pull-out resistance. This eliminates the requirement to chase the threads after the moulding operation.
  • These press inserts press into the material after installation using a rubber mallet or an arbour press and are available in flush or flanged variants.

Buying Guide

Based on Material

Brass

Provides electrical conductivity & has non-magnetic nature; less strength than stainless steel. For hardwood, metal, plastic surfaces.

Zinc

Provides mild corrosion resistance. For plaster, softwood surfaces.

Stainless Steel

Offers excellent corrosion resistance and moderate structural rigidity; is stronger than brass & aluminium. For carbon fibre, fibreglass, garolite, hardwood, metal, plastic, softwood surfaces.

Titanium

High strength-to-weight ratio and higher resistance to acids & saltwater than nickel alloy & stainless steel. For metal surfaces.

Steel

Provides hardness, structural rigidity and durability. For fibreglass, hardwood, metal, plastic, softwood surfaces.

Aluminium

Lighter than stainless steel / steel / brass; provides corrosion resistance & non-magnetic properties. For metal, plastic surfaces.

Plastic

Lightweight and cheaper to use as compared to other materials. For carbon fibre, fibreglass, garolite surfaces.

Nickel

Higher resistance to acids & saltwater as compared to stainless steel. For metal surfaces.

Selection Factors

Material

Construction material & finish determine stability in heavy-duty applications or corrosive environments.

Threading

Users can identify threaded inserts according to Imperial, Metric, fine, coarse or special thread types.

Body Shape / Profile

It denotes the size of fastener it would fit, thread depth & application compatiblity.

Torque Capacity

Long threaded inserts have greater pullout capacity (harder to pull out) whereas inserts having wide diameters have a superior overall torque-out capacity (harder to rotate inside the hole).

Helical Inserts Styles

With Prong (Tanged)

Helical inserts having a prong provide ease of installation. The installation tool grips this prong to install an insert into a tapped hole.

Without Prong (Tangless)

Helical inserts without a prong do not need breaking off and retrieval of the prong during installation. They are used in applications where debris may cause damage.

Based On Body Shape / Profile

Heat Set

Tapered heat-set inserts are used to install plastic fasteners permanently. These inserts are heated after installation to melt the plastic & cool it slowly for solidifying the fastener around the insert's knurls & ridges and providing resistance to torque & pull-outs.

Key Locking

These inserts form the strongest hold of all threaded inserts on soft metal surfaces as they feature distorted internal threads that lock the screws into place. They have keys that prevent slipping or rotating by driving into the surrounding material. They have high strength, owing to their solid, one-piece metal construction, unlike helical inserts that are made of coiled wire.

Hammer In

These inserts are hammered into wooden or fibreglass surfaces. They feature hooked prongs for excellent holding power without splitting the wood.

Tapping

These inserts are also called Tap-Lok inserts. They do not require a separate tap for thread cutting as they can cut threading in soft metals like aluminium.

Helical

These inserts are used with metal fasteners to prevent them from sticking or binding without using any coating or lubricant. They are ideal for particle-free environments. They are also known as Heli-Coil inserts and have coils that expand after installation to secure the insert.

Press Fit

They have a knurled & tapered body to hold them in place in soft metals like aluminium. These inserts have flexible metal teeth for anchoring them in composite materials.

Thread Locking

These inserts use adhesives that reach full strength after some time for keeping the inserts in place.

Key-Locking Insert Wall Styles

Thin

These inserts are suitable for small-sized holes & holes near the workpiece edge.

Thick

These inserts are used in larger holes and have more strength than thin-walled inserts.

Extra Thick

They are stronger than both thick & thin-wall inserts and are used for reducing the size of tapped holes.

Insert End Styles

Open

They allow the passing of long fasteners through them.

Closed

They are suitable for sealing out elements and protecting their threads from debris.

Heat Set Insert Styles

Flanged

They feature a wider end than standard inserts for a large load-bearing surface and hard-to-pull-out properties. The flange also provides a larger soldering area. They also prevent over-tightening & cracking of plastic.

Standard

They have a uniform shape for general application.
